Abertillery Excelsiors A - L 6-2 (A)
24/08/2010 North Gwent Res Div.
This was always going to be a tough game for the Bluebirds but it was made even harder by some last minute withdrawals, which forced us to field a young and inexperienced midfield. However it was the experienced back four that let the side down as we found ourselves 2-0 down after 10 minutes, with some very poor defending to blame.
This is not how Sewers wanted to start the new season but before he could make any changes we found ourselves unsuccessfully trying to defending a corner (as nobody was marking on the edge of the box) as the Abertillery Excelsior midfielder scored a powerful header. 3-0 down with only 20 minutes on the clock!
It looked like we were going to be on the wrong end of a double score line but after the third goal we managed to ride out the rest of the half, stopping the excelsior’s creating any chances but also failing to create anything of our own.
At half time Sewers made some position changes and this seemed to work as we were the better side for the first 15 minutes but yet again poor marking let us down and a cross into our box saw the Excelsiors winger fly kick it into the net, 4-0.
Time for some subs as sewers brought on more youth in the form of Sam Goodenough and Ross Hancocks. With fresh legs on the pitch we pushed for a goal but got caught out on the counter attack and a missed time challenge on the edge of the box saw the resulting free kick turned into the net.
5-0 down and with nothing to lose we resorted to the long ball tactic and it soon paid off as a flick on confused the opposition goalkeeper with Ross being first to react and put the ball into the back of the net. 5-1.We now had the bit between our teeth and it wasn’t long before Shane Keech (making his welcomed return) added a second. At 5-2 we thought the comeback was on but how wrong we were as yet another miss timed challenge on the edge of the box saw the resulting free kick find the back of the net.
After that goal our dream was shattered and we never created another chance but, on the plus side, we never let in any more goals and so it ended 6-2 to the Excelsiors.
